THE DAMAGE REPORTS

Ever since Led Zeppelin supposedly violated some unsuspecting Bay Area groupie in the mid-seventies with an eel (or an underwater creature of some sort), the behavior of rock stars on the road has become the stuff legends are made of. Female encounters not withstanding, rockers are notoriously damage-prone. From the Rolling Stones to the Sex Pistols, the stories can make even the lamest campfire seem interesting. Van Halen is no exception. Rarely critical favorites, they were widely regarded as the party band following their 1978 debut. For a time, the music seemed secondary; they were four kids from California living the rock 'n’ roll dream. The band (read: Dave Roth) relished the non-stop booze and babes reputation and stoked the proverbial fire at every available opportunity. One wonders whether the stories of mass destruction and backstage carnage are, in fact, true. We’re here to set the record straight-these guys loved to break things!

Prepare to chuckle, because we’ve got some hard evidence. The Inside has obtained a copy of one of the many "Damage Reports" Van Halen's Tour manager issued during and after tours. This particular "Destructo" list was issued sometime after the Southern and Western legs of an early 1980s tour. Al’s fascination with toilet seats and telephones is especially entertaining. How’d they ever make it out alive?
